When exploring cannabis, one of the first distinctions you’ll encounter is indica, sativa, and hybrid. These categories are commonly used to describe the typical effects associated with different strains—indica often linked to relaxation, sativa to uplifting or energizing experiences, and hybrids offering a blend of both. The reality is more nuanced than these labels suggest, they remain a helpful starting point for understanding how different cannabis varieties may feel and function.
What is Sativa?

Sativa’s are generally more uplifting and stimulating, and often promote wakefulness. They generally provide a creative high and tend to provide mental energy.
Plant Characteristics:
- Thin, long leaves

What is Indica?

Indica’s are generally more relaxing, calming, and better for evening or night-time use because they often promote deep relaxation and sometimes drowsiness. Indicas generally provide a relaxed ‘stoned’ feeling.
Plant Characteristics:
- Thick, wide leaves
- Stocky
- Dense, heavy buds

What is Hybrid?

Hybrids are a result of two or more strains being bred together. If half the genetics are between a 50/50 split and a 60/40 split (sativa/indica, or indica/sativa) it’s a hybrid. If a hybrid has more than 60% indica or sativa genetics, it’s considered an “Indica Dominant Hybrid” or “Sativa Dominant Hybrid”. These mixed strains take on a blend of their parents genetics, features, and effects.
Types:
- Balanced
- Sativa Dominant
