Legalization

What is B.C.’s approach to cannabis legalization?

The Province of BC has made the following regulatory decisions. Adults 19+:

  • May possess up to 30 grams of legal cannabis, dried or equivalent in non-dried form, in public.
  • May share up to 30 grams of legal cannabis with other adults (giving or selling to youth is a criminal offense and there are several measures that help prevent youth from accessing cannabis within the Cannabis Act).
  • May buy dried or fresh cannabis and cannabis oil from a provincially-licensed retailer.
  • May make cannabis products, such as food and drinks, at home as long as organic solvents are not used to create concentrates.

Where can I consume cannabis?

B.C. will generally allow adults to use non-medical cannabis in public spaces where tobacco smoking and vaping are permitted (banned in areas frequented by youth, including community beaches, parks, and playgrounds). Use of cannabis in any form is illegal for all occupants while in vehicles, cannabis retail stores as well as cannabis lounges.

Can I travel with cannabis?

Domestically: Cannabis laws are different between provinces and territories. This includes legal age, where you can smoke or vape, consume, and buy cannabis. Make sure to learn the laws before you travel. When you are travelling within Canada, if you meet the minimum age requirement of the province or territory you are in, you may possess up to 30 grams of dried cannabis or the equivalent. It is ok to fly with your legal cannabis, in your carry-on or checked baggage, but passengers are responsible for knowing the laws and regulations in effect at their destination.

Internationally : It is illegal to transport cannabis across the Canadian border. It doesn’t matter whether you’re leaving or entering Canada, or what the laws of your destination are. Bottom line: don’t cross the Canadian border with cannabis.
